During the winter, I like to look at the plants without their leaves and flowers, and try to identify them. This plant caught my eye. I saw a large clump of it on the side of the road while I was driving one day. I didn’t have time to stop, and wondered what it was. A few days later I was walking in a completely different place and saw a similar group of plants. This time, I had my camera and the time to examine them!
I thought back to the flowers I had seen in this spot over the course of the year. The stems were 3-5 feet tall. The flowers were in clusters at the top of the stem. From what remained of the plant, it seemed like the flower had four petals. I guessed that it was evening primrose. A quick web search when I got home revealed that my guess was correct! This is evening primrose in the winter.
Have you seen it? You can find some on the Hatcher Creek Greenway close to the parking lot where the pickle ball courts are in Morrisville Community Park.
