Can you believe that December is almost here? Winter will officially begin in just a few short weeks. Will any flowers bloom in December? Japanese mazus, winter honeysuckle, Asiatic hawksbeard, and leatherleaf mahonia will begin to bloom this month.
There are many flowers that bloom year-round. The experts have different months for when they officially begin their year, but you’ll start to see these year-rounders a little more in December as the temperatures drop and the light fades.
I’ve seen prickly sow-thistle and common groundsel putting out more flowers in the last few weeks, even though they don’t bloom until March. I’ve also seen some hairy bittercress with flowers, and that’s not supposed to bloom until February. I think these plants put out a few early flowers as long as they have the right temperature and light, even though their peak bloom is later in the winter.
