Some spring flowers have a second bloom in autumn. This week, I found Carolina jessamine and green and gold blooming at Church Street Park. What a nice surprise!

Biting Insects
Have you ever been bitten by a horsefly? Wow, that hurts! When I’m outside, I expect ticks to jump on me and mosquitos to bite me. Otherwise, bugs tend to leave you alone if you leave them alone. Right? I guess not. I walked out my front door and felt something like a razor hit… Continue reading Biting Insects
Black and Yellow Garden Spider
Fall is a great time to observe spiders. This is a black and yellow garden spider (Argiope aurantia). The female spider, shown above, can be over an inch long! Notice the zigzag pattern inside the web. This is called the stabilimentum. It is unclear what its function is, but it might be a warning to… Continue reading Black and Yellow Garden Spider
Happy Halloween!
Here’s a scary sight for your Halloween. A Florida predatory stink bug (Euthyrhynchus floridanus) feeding on a European hornet (Vespa crabro). The stink bug harpoons its prey with its beak. We didn’t realize what spider we were looking at until after doing some research at home. This yellow and gray spider is native to Asia. It was introduced to Georgia in 2014 and has been making its… Continue reading Joro Spider

But look carefully, and you’ll notice that there are several different white asters out there. Here are some of the more common asters in our area: Long-stalked aster (Symphyotrichum dumosum)- the… Continue reading Small White Asters
What Flowers Will Bloom in November?
November is another month that doesn’t see many new flowers blooming. If you have a fall blooming camellia in your yard, your flowers might open this month. Also, keep an eye out for spring blooming flowers that might have a second bloom in the fall. Otherwise, November is a time to enjoy the beautiful colors… Continue reading What Flowers Will Bloom in November?
What’s That? October 5, 2024
Have you seen these tiny white fingers coming up out of the ground? What is that? This is a mushroom commonly called fairy fingers or white worm coral fungus (Clavaria fragilis). I’ve seen it in the woods on the Shiloh and Indian Creek Greenways. It is very small: no more than an inch tall and… Continue reading What’s That? October 5, 2024
