Surprise on the Trail

I came around a bend in the Shiloh Greenway yesterday and was surprised to see a group (a gaggle) of six geese walking up the trail toward me. Of course, the geese are very common around here, and I often see them on the Indian Creek Greenway at the trailhead by the water. When I see them on the Shiloh Greenway, they’re usually in the water or eating the grass by the retention ponds. Yesterday, I just happened to catch them as they were moving on land.

I snapped a few pictures as they came closer to me and stopped for a bite of grass. They almost made it to the end of the fence when a cyclist passed and caused them to turn around.

They walked to the other end of the fence and marched single file across the grass to the pond.

One by one, they jumped into the water.

The geese joined a pair of mallard ducks digging in the mud in the corner of the pond.

It was a peaceful and entertaining scene that made me smile.
