Devil’s Urn Mushrooms

Devil’s Urn Mushrooms

When I’m out for a walk in a familiar place, I try to pick a spot to just stop and look. Look down, look up, look at eye level. I’ll spend a few minutes and really notice what’s there.

These devil’s urn mushrooms (Urnula craterium) blend in with the leaf litter around this log. If I walked by quickly, I never would have noticed them.

Here’s a closer look.

Devil’s Urn Mushrooms

Devil’s urn mushrooms are an early spring mushroom. They usually grow on fallen oak trees. They need both the dead tree and the soil to grow.

Tell me the interesting things that you’ve found when you took a moment to stop and look.
